While sitting here with my cup of coffee I want to share what
resettlement means and also to share more about what the UNHCR does for refugees:
What is the UNHCR? It stands for United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees. They protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. They are truly inspiring and I am thankful to learn more about what they are doing for the world. I am also excited to share more about what they are doing for this world that is filled with violence. In the process of refugees coming to America they first must register with the UNHCR. They make sure the refugee qualifies as a refugee under international law. Many of my stories will relate back to the UNHCR.
Definition of resettlement: the process of moving people to a different place to live, because they are no longer allowed to stay in the area where they used to live. This term is mostly referred to with refugees. Since there are thousands of refugees in America they are resettling in states to live a more safe life. After the process of being accepted to live in the states, they work with an agency or non-profit through their resettlement programs. Their programs offer a variety of options of help: affordable housing, transportation, career help, schooling for children, English as a secondary language help, etc. These are necessary for someone to live in the United States. A lot of the refugees that come over are families, which means children need an education. Resettlement does not always mean permanent! Refugees are coming to America to be in a safe environment, which does not always mean they are staying forever. To resettle in a new country can be intimidating but truly a blessing for refugees. They are able to get away from violence and war but also have to deal with the judgement of Americans.
I am helping define UNHCR because they have inspired me to futher continue this campaign. Resettlement of refugees can sometimes be difficult to understand. What I want to make known is the money being raised is going towards resettlement programs for refugees in Pittsburgh through a reliable agency called Jewish Family and Children Services. They are forever grateful for what Hope In Pittsburgh is doing for cultural awareness and getting donations in even if it is only $10 DONATE HERE
